One of the things I love about TikTok is the number of artists I've had the chance to interact with on the platform. For example, Samantha Belfeld (aka @sammiethefist) asked if we could exchange art pieces, and I am more than happy to do that!
Because of the video she commented on, I had a feeling she would like something similar but original. I decided to make an abstract piece that took inspiration from a lava lamp. I can't wait to see what she sends me.

Jonesy loves watching the Christmas train while I speed paint mail art postcards

This weekend I pulled out the electric train to set up around our Christmas tree. This train set is at least 30 years old so it took a bit of cleaning and adjusting to get it going around the track, but I nursed it along until it got there. And now, my cat Jonesy loves to sit and watch it go around and around.
Meanwhile, in today's video, I'm speedpainting a postcard for my friend Gina. She's part of the mail art exchange I've been running all month.
I'm using Arteza Real Brush Pens on watercolor paper just heavy enough to act as a good medium for making postcards with. From what I've seen of the cards people have received from me, they seem to hold up very well. Unfortunately, it seems like someone else has shipped a bunch of glitter in the same mailbox my cards were in and they arrived covered in glitter. I certainly didn't add glitter! So, I'm counting it as part of the "process" of making mail art - whatever "damage" or additions made to the cards as part of either the wear and tear of the postal system or mishandling is now part of the process of creating this art. That's just how it goes...

How to protect watercolor paintings without glass: Use wax medium to protect watercolor paintings

In today's video I'm showing you how to protect watercolor paintings without using glass. Cold wax medium is a safe, effective way of protecting and preserving your paintings.
First of all, before you apply any kind of wax or varnish, decide how you want to mount your painting. If you want to mount it to a panel board, make sure you do that first. In this example, I'm simply applying a layer of wax to help protect postcards I'm making for an art exchange with friends. Normally, I'd mount my watercolor painting to a panel board, but I'm skipping that step as it is unnecessary for this project. If that's the case for you, as well, read on.
A lot of artists like to avoid using glass because of the glare and extra expense of a frame. Personally, I prefer to mount my paintings to a wood panel for hanging and displaying. I love being able to look at works of art without a distracting frame around them trying to look at details through glass with lights glaring on it. But how do you protect your painting from dust, dirt and especially water and humidity without glass?
Easy!
The secret is to use a cold wax medium. I like to use Gamblin cold wax medium to waterproof watercolor paintings because it's easy to apply and is very effective, but there are a number of other brands, like Dorland's, that work exactly the same.
As I say in the video, you can absolutely use a shop cloth, a paper towel, a rag or even a sponge, but I prefer to use my fingers because it lets me feel for any spots that I might have missed. On a side note, another way to check for missed spots is the view the surface from the side and look at how the light glares across it. There should be a slight sheen to the surface. If you notice any spots that aren't shiny, add some wax and buff it in with circular motion.
Of course, there will be extra cleanup involved if you use your bare hands to apply the wax, so you might want to use gloves. However, I find that Dawn dish soap takes the wax right off my hands. It's never been a problem for me.
Once the wax has had sufficient time to dry and is no longer sticky, you can use a cloth to buff the surface for a glossy finish that is sure to catch the eye. And then, if you want, you can apply another layer just to be sure, but it probably won't be necessary.
The brand I used in this video is Gamblin Cold Wax Medium. A 4 oz. jar usually costs around $11 but it can go a long way.
Making abstract art using Penrose Triangle Tiling

Hey, it's me, Dee! Once again, back with these art cards that I've been working on using some simple pencil illustrations and Arteza Real Brush Pens to color and paint with.
In case you didn't see my last video, these are art postcards that I'm making to send out to my friends. They aren't Christmas cards or anything like that, just some fun art that I wanted to paint on a postcard and send out to people.
What I'm trying to doing here is Penrose Tiling. Or, at least, my take on Penrose Tiling. I can't really explain it because I don't fully understand it, but basically, Penrose tiling is an example of aperiodic tiling which is a method of covering the surface of a plane by non-overlapping polygons and other shapes. If done right, you can cover an infinite space and create dazzling patterns.
To do this, I start by finding the center of the card and then pull out a protractor to find points in a circle around the center that are equal in distance apart. In this example, I want 5 points which will give me room for 5 equally sized polygonal shapes. To figure out where those points should be I just divide 360 by 5, which gives me the number 72. I then make a mark every 72 degrees around the circle and then go from there.
This project has been going great, so far. The whole idea is to have a way to stay in touch with my friends and family in the art community that is unique to each individual. It's giving us a way to keep busy, and keep being creative, while also giving us a chance to share our art with a very specific audience. The end goal is to get artwork into the hands of those who will likely most appreciate it. And that, in itself, feels like an antidote to the world of Instagram and the influencers' art scene.
To that end, I probably won't be making videos for ALL of these cards... just a select few. The rest are only going to be for whoever they are meant for, and they can do whatever they like once they have it. I think that's the best way to honor this project.

Recently I've been painting a lot of skateboarding inspired art and I've found that Arteza real brush pens are great to use. They have the feel of watercolor painting but at much more convenient. I like how clean and vivid the colors are, but can be messy with just a little bit of water, and open up a whole world of creativity.
I'm really into skateboarding, as people who follow my other YouTube channel know, so I've been creating these portraits of professional skateboarders so that I have something to do now that winter is here and it's too cold and rainy to skate.
